Kosher in lexicography. Problems of one religion term
Dvořáková, Žaneta
The Hebrew term košer (‘kosher’) came into Czech through Jewish sociolect / ethnolect. It was originally a religious term for what is ritually pure and appropriate. In addition to the adjective and adverb košer, Czech dictionaries also contain a number of other forms and derivatives, but some of them are no longer used at the moment (e.g. košerný, košerně). Our evaluation is based on an analysis of material base from the Syn2015 Corpus and from a probe into contemporary texts in Jewish magazines or on the websites of Jewish communities and organizations. In Czech dictionaries, we may see a reduction of the meaning compared to how the term is traditionally used in the Jewish community, e.g. the adjective košer is limited to meat, the verb košerovat is associated only with the ritual slaughter. The nouns mentioned in the dictionaries are also very debatable: masculine košer in the sense of ‘butcher’ and masculine košer with the meanings of ‘cut’ and ‘food appropriate for Jews to eat’, these are based on isolated documents from the works of authors apparently unfamiliar with the Jewish community. The question then is whether (and according to what criteria) such words should be included in the dictionaries.

V následujícím segmentu práce se studie hlouběji zabývá konkrétními řečovými akty, které se běžně vyskytují v oblasti angličtiny v elektrotechnice. Jedná se o tyto řečové akty: explikace, exemplifikace, hodnocení, argumentace, definování, vyvození závěru a kritika. Co se týče praktické části práce, analyzuje příklady technických a humanitních textů, které odpovídají různým řečovým aktům, jež byly zkoumány v teoretické části.
the essence of photography in the digital age
Doubek, Zdeněk ; Holeček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis solves the question of photography not only from the point of view of a work of art, but as a part of a cultural code. Photography in the digital era has the potential to become a new kind of visual language. From this perspective, the photographic universe reveals several essential questions, which we address here. These questions explore topics such as: historical development of images and text, the difference between traditional images and technical images, the cultural impact of mass production of digital devices and photographs, the essence of photography as a symbol from the point of view of semiotics and logic, the difficulties of deciphering photography, the linguistic aspects of digital photography or the meaning of photography in virtual (public) space. Due to the nature of the monitored topics, the work will address problems mainly related to language, logic, epistemology, human freedom in the context of man/device and marginally also semiotics.
Imaginative apologetics
FALDYNOVÁ, Milana
The focus of this thesis lies in the cooperation of imagination and apologetics, which - if succesful - can be a step towards meaningful sharing of the gospel. Imagination as a way of perception of meaning can also be a useful tool in today's world, which seems to lose interest in meaning whatsoever. We seem to find a representative case of imaginative apologetics in the works of C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien and Dorothy L. Sayers. Using imaginative way, these authors deal with many apologetical issues in their stories. The need for a good quality work of imaginative apologetics seems even more valid, when we learn that many atheistic and agnostic authors use imaginative ways to defend ideology of their own; this thesis deals namely with Philip Pullman, whose work could be marked as work of agnostic imaginative apologetics.

Winged words in German, Czech and English and their usage in the text.

The topic of this bachelor thesis is Winged words in German, Czech and English and their usage in the text. The practical part introduces German winged words and their Czech and English counterparts. Subsequently, based on the types of equivalence established by Helgunde Henschel (1993), the winged words are put into different groups, depending on the extent of equivalence between their German phrasing and their Czech and/or English phrasing. The practical part also deals with selected German winged words. It will explain what exactly it is that makes their Czech and/or English phrasing different from the German one, it will explain their origin, their meaning and also how they and their English and Czech equivalents are used in the text.
